Why Does My Ankle Hurt?

Ankle pain can happen for various reasons. Whatever the source may be, it generally causes difficulty in completing daily activities. Some people can be injured by unexpectedly stepping off of a curb and twisting the ankle, which may cause the ligaments and tendons to move beyond their normal range of motion. This can be classified as a sprain or a fracture, and an X-ray is often taken to determine which one it is. Existing medical conditions can cause ankle pain, such as different types of arthritis, including rheumatoid and gout. Cartilage damage may have occurred from previous injuries, and this can make the ankle weak and unstable, possibly causing pain and discomfort. It is beneficial to seek prompt medical attention if the ankle becomes inflamed, is unable to move, or if there are signs of an infection. If you have ankle pain, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine the cause and provide you with relief and treatment options that are right for you.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with the foot specialists from Affiliates in Foot Care, P.C.. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Where Do Corns Develop on the Feet?

Excess friction is often the cause of corns developing on the feet. Common places where corns can be found are on the side of the pinky toe, on top of the toes, or on the bottom of the feet. Corns can occur from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, and relief may be felt when the shoes are removed. The small area of skin that is affected can be rough and yellowed, and can be sensitive when touched. Some patients find their corns  feel better when the feet are soaked in warm water, which may help to soften them. Temporary relief can be found when moisturizer is applied to the corn, followed by gently rubbing it with a pumice stone. Additionally, people may find it is beneficial to wear a protective pad over the corns, which may help to protect it from rubbing against the shoe. If you have a corn on your foot, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can help you with providing a solution for relief.

Corns can make walking very painful and should be treated immediately. If you have questions regarding your feet and ankles, contact the foot specialists of Affiliates in Foot Care, P.C.. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Corns: What Are They? And How Do You Get Rid of Them?
Corns are thickened areas on the skin that can become painful. They are caused by excessive pressure and friction on the skin. Corns press into the deeper layers of the skin and are usually round in shape.

Ways to Prevent Corns
There are many ways to get rid of painful corns such as:

  • Wearing properly fitting shoes that have been measured by a professional
  • Wearing shoes that are not sharply pointed or have high heels
  • Wearing only shoes that offer support

Treating Corns

Although most corns slowly disappear when the friction or pressure stops, this isn’t always the case. Consult with your podiatrist to determine the best treatment option for your case of corns.

Keys to Preventing Falls on Balconies

It is well-known that senior citizens can struggle with maintaining the health of their feet. There are many different reasons for this. However, as a result of diminished foot health, seniors might become more likely to suffer a fall or tumble. One place in which a senior might fall is on a balcony in the home or even near Juliette balconies. Obviously a senior might be able to combat this possibility of falling on a balcony by strengthening the muscles in their feet to make them more resilient and stable. Another way to help prevent falls on balconies might even include ensuring that there are adequate railings and guards installed on or near the balcony. Providing proper edge protection might go a long way in preventing falls among seniors. If you are a senior citizen that has a balcony in their home and you are concerned about the health of your feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist today.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with the foot specialists from Affiliates in Foot Care, P.C.. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

A small bunion that forms on the side of the pinky toe is called a bunionette. Many people refer to this as a tailor’s bunion, and it occurs when the bottom bone on the pinky toe shifts or becomes larger. This name originated hundreds of years ago when tailors would work with their legs crossed, causing the pinky toes to touch the ground. This would cause a small bump to form on the base of the little toe. It often rubs against the shoe, causing pain and discomfort. A common reason for a tailor’s bunion to develop is from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. Additionally, loose ligaments, tight calf muscles, or a foot that leans to the outside may be causes for a tailor’s bunion to form. Temporary relief may come from choosing shoes with adequate room in the toe area and wearing a protective pad over the bunion. If you have this condition, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can provide you with permanent relief, which may include minor surgery for removal.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact the foot specialists of Affiliates in Foot Care, P.C.. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery
